Grey / lamellar cast iron

Grey cast iron, also known as lamellar cast iron, is characterized by the presence of free carbon in the form of flakes. On a fractured surface, a grey color is visible, which gives grey cast iron its name.

Properties of grey cast Iron

  • Wear-resistant
  • Cost-effective
  • Easily machinable
  • Damping properties
  • High compressive strength

Heat treatments for grey cast iron

The properties of grey cast iron can be influenced through heat treatment. Examples include:

  • Annealing
  • Stress-relieving

Alloying grey cast iron

Alloying grey cast iron can enhance specific properties. For example, adding chromium (0.15 to 1.0%) increases the material’s hardness.
