Nodular (ductile) cast iron

In nodular (ductile) cast iron, free carbon is present in the form of nodules or small spheres, which gives this material its name.

Nodular cast iron differs from grey (lamellar) cast iron by offering superior mechanical properties, approaching those of cast steel. The properties of nodular cast iron can be further enhanced by adding alloying elements.

Heat Treatments for Nodular Cast Iron

The properties of nodular cast iron can be influenced through heat treatment. Examples include:

  • Annealing
  • Stress-relieving
